Mahabalipuram City
This place located at a distance of 60km bears to be famous for temples and sculptures. This city is well connected to other cities through long national roads. People who wish to visit this place should start their journey during the month of October and stay in this place till March. Mahabalipuram is known for ancient history, formerly this was well known place. In olden days there were seven pagodas on the shores of Mahabalipuram. Most of the temples and rock carvings of this place were built during the reigns of Narasimha Verman I and II.
There are many tourists’ attractions on Mahabalipuram; one among them is the Varaha caves. This cave is built on a small rock cut mandapgam. And has finished and faceted gems. This cave has four panels of famous pallava doorkeepers. These pallavas each have a rear expression on their face. Another well known cave of this place is Mahishamardhini Cave. Sunlight falls slowly onto this gave giving it a glow. There is a sculpture called Somaskanda Sculpture, this sculpture radiates peace, wisdom and power.
This place consists of the world’s largest bas-relief called Arjuna’s Penance. This full is in stone. Ancient sayings say that this was the place where Bhagiratha performed his penance to bring Ganga, for moksha of his ancestors. The cleft in the rocks depict the descent of Ganga. There are also sculptures of rathas on this temple; these sculptures show five rathas or chariots of which Draupadi chariaot is the small one. There is a museum in the East Raja Street. This museum is famous for Sculptures. There are around 3,000 sculptures at this place. Other places like Tiger caves, Tirukkalikundram, Muttkadu are just few kilometers from Mahabalipuram. Tiger caves are famous for rock cut carvings. These carvings were of 7th century. Muttukadu is 21km from Mamallapuram, there are many resorts for people to come and enjoy events like boating, canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing. Pongal is the most famous festival, this festival is celebrated in the mid of January with great joy.
