There are few temples in India dedicated to the Sun God, who is believed to be the giver of power and good health. Among them the notable temple is the Sun temple of Konark, located in Orissa state in the city of Konark. Well connected by rail and road the city of Konark attracts pilgrims all the year round for this very reason, during the months of January this place is thronged by Vaishnavites for performing special puja to the Sun god. Also known as Arka thirtha, the 13th century temple by itself is a testament to the magnificent architectural glory, the God is seen on a chariot drawn by seven horses. This temple withstood the test of time, though it lost many of the original structures, it still retains the glory with its intricately carved structures and gorgeously carved sculptures similar to those of the Khajuraho.

This temple got the status as a global Heritage site for this very reason. Among other temples with its twin lions guarding the entrance is the Maya Devi temple dedicated to the Goddess. Konark is famous for the dance festival which is organized in the first week of December in the open air auditorium, this place with its backdrop as the Sun temple is host to the Odissi the state dance of Orissa and other classical dances of India. Exhibitions are organized during this period and draw the best in class of the artists and traditional dance troupes from all over India and world. Sand art exhibition on the beaches should not be missed.

The Konark Museum is a collection of all the artifacts excavated form the sight among them the notable ones being the nine gods who according to Hindu mythology are the guardians of nine planets and control human life and their deeds. A holy dip in the Bay of Bengal in the Konark beach with its sparkling crystal waters is a must for the pilgrims. The tourists are welcomed by the Konark beach with its rapid waves and white grained sands. Near by to Konark is the city of Kuruma where Buddhist relics were excavated and the Bhumisparsa mudra statue where Lord Buddha was kissing the earth before his nirvana was found.
