Gwalior is one of the ancient historical cities of Madhya Pradesh. The glory and grandeur of Gwalior is due to its massive fort that was built in the 8th century. Gwalior is considered as a cradle for many of the dynasties who ruled India. A number of kings, poets and musicians owe their origin in Gwalior. During the revolt that took place in the year 1857, Gwalior was the most affected city. Though the city has changed hands between the different dynasty of rulers, the Marathas, Tomars, Lodhis, the ancient fort of Gwalior remained unaffected. Gwalior is one such city that has the traditional and modern cultures congregated in. This city has an extreme climate. Frequent deaths are seen in the city during the months of summer due to the heat waves. The most appropriate time to visit the city is during the months of October to March. The city of Gwalior is well connected with the rest of the states and cities.
Gwalior is located at a distance of 321 kms from Delhi. Some of the common places having a historical importance in Gwalior are the Fort, the Jai Vilas Palace, Sun temple etc. The fort indicates the grandeur and past glory of Gwalior. The house of the maharaja of Gwalior is the Jai Vilas Palace that is located in the new city of Gwalior. A mausoleum of a Sufi saint Ghaus Mohammad is designed in the Moghal architectural style on a sand stone with delicate carvings. Near Morar, a sun temple was constructed in a similar fashion as that of the Konark temple. Several places exist around Gwalior that is more famous as excursion sites. Shivpuri is one such having a number of palaces and lakes. The palaces belong to Scindias. A palace built in 1614 depicts the Bundelean architecture. This palace is located in Datia town. The famous paintings of Bundela are seen in the palace. The cultures of Rajputs and Moghals are seen in the Gopinath temple. The town of Chanderi is 239 kms away from Gwalior is famous for the famous Chanderi sarees. A number of forests, hills and lakes surround Chanderi. The Tansen music festival is the common familiar festival of Gwalior. The tigra dam is a common picnic spot.
